Stanford to cut striking nurses’ pay, health care benefits | News

Angie K. Claar April 21, 2022

Stanford Well being Care and Lucile Packard Kid’s Healthcare facility administrators have introduced they will cut off well being coverage positive aspects to striking nurses and their family members as effectively as pay.

The hospitals announced the cuts on Friday to the Committee for Recognition of Nursing Achievement (CRONA), a union of more than 5,000 nurses representing the two hospitals, which designs to begin striking on April 25 immediately after both of those sides failed to arrive at agreement agreements.

The union has posted a petition on its website that has so far garnered approximately 23,000 signatures. The petition will be offered to healthcare facility officers prior to the strike, CRONA claimed in a statement.

“It is beyond cruel and insulting for the hospitals to slash off wellbeing care for the nurses who have offered every thing to the hospitals in these final two many years and are basically inquiring to negotiate widespread-sense answers for their sufferers and their job — specially when the hospitals reported that their joint functioning surplus amplified by $676 million in 2021, in addition to a merged profits of approximately $8.3 billion,” the union claimed.

“Alternatively of trying to handle why 93% of suitable nurses voted to go on strike, the hospitals responded with this cruel move that’s clearly created to punish nurses and split their resolve.”

In a assertion, Dale E. Beatty, main nurse government and vice president of affected person treatment providers for Stanford Wellness Treatment, and Jesus Cepero, senior vice president of individual treatment and main nursing officer for Stanford Children’s Health and fitness, confirmed the hospitals will slash the nurses’ overall health treatment added benefits and pay back if they strike.

The hospitals are “very well organized to keep on to offer risk-free, quality wellness treatment to the communities that depend on us,” they stated.

Nurses who strike will not be paid for any shifts they miss out on.

“In addition, employer-compensated health and fitness positive aspects will stop on May well 1 for nurses who go out on strike and continue to be out through the conclusion of the thirty day period in which the strike begins,” they said.

Stanford quoted from a “contingency manual” the union supplied to nurses:

“If a strike lasts outside of the close of the thirty day period in which it begins and the hospitals discontinue medical coverage, you will have the alternative to pay back for continued protection.”

The hospitals said that nurses who opt for to strike may pay back out of pocket to go on their health and fitness coverage by way of the Consolidated Omnibus Spending plan Reconciliation Act (COBRA), a federal application that enables staff members to briefly lengthen their team wellness added benefits.

Stanford mentioned the go is a normal exercise that “is not exceptional to our hospitals and applies to any of our employees on unpaid position, like those who leave the healthcare facility to transition to yet another position.

“We keep on being hopeful that CRONA will return to the bargaining table to do the job with us to attain a new contract agreement and avert a strike. We guidance and value the amazing nurses of Stanford Well being Treatment and Lucile Packard Children’s Clinic and have set a potent economic proposal on the desk that, when a agreement is ratified, guarantees they will stay the maximum compensated nurses in the country,” the hospitals stated.

CRONA’s requires involve offering mental health and fitness companies, retaining present health care gains, increasing pay back and applying actions to deal with nurse burnout, which has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
